The only thing that’s better than being a race car driver is settling in for the night and watching a racing themed movie. In fact, it’s such a great way to spend a weekend, we’ve put together a quick roundup of our all-time top three favorite racing movies.
1. The Cannonball Run
The Cannonball Run is one of the best racing movies of all time, largely because it features such an all-star cast in a fun comedy based on a cross-country illegal race. It debuted in 1981 and starred Burt Reynolds, Farrah Fawcett, Roger Moore, Dean Martin, Terry Bradshaw, and Sammy Davis Jr. Also, it’s supposed to be loosely based on real life events.
2. Gone in Sixty Seconds
Starring Nicholas Cage, Gone in Sixty Seconds was a blockbuster hit in 2000. Cage plays a car thief who’s retired, but is forced back into his old position to save his brother. Part of the appeal is whether or not he’ll be able to pull off stealing 50 cars in one night with the help of his old crew. The other part is the parade of high-end cars that are featured in the movie, such as a 1967 Shelby Mustang GT 500.
Speed was probably one of the best known movies that came out of the 90s. With an all-star cast featuring Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Dennis Hopper, and Joe Morton. While its focus wasn’t on racing per se, the young cop protagonist – Reeves – is forced to use his expert driving skills to navigate a city bus that’s been armed with explosives by terrorists. If the bus goes below 50 mph, it blows up.
