Spend a little time to get your car ready for safe summer adventures.
The snow is melting away, daylight hours are getting longer and longer and the kiddos are counting down the last few weeks before school is out. Summer is fast approaching! As Denver drivers map out their summer road trips ahead, make sure your vehicle is ready for a safe journey.
The professionals at Pro Auto Care recommend these easy steps for inspecting your vehicle before you head out the door. We’ll get you safely on the road in no time.
Pressure is On
Your winter tires are great for navigating through slush and damp conditions, but they’re not needed during the summer months. Change out your winter tires and then check the air pressure on the new set. Air pressure ensures the best possible contact between your tires and the road. We recommend checking the pressure in the morning when it’s colder, helping to ensure you get a more accurate read. Take note of any bald or worn spots on your tires. Excessive wear may mean it’s time for a new set of wheels.
Brake or Bust
Even during the summer, Colorado’s high country continues to be a popular destination for those dirt biking, camping and hiking enthusiasts. Make sure your brake fluid is ready for a trip full of downhill descents. Locate your brake fluid reservoir and top off to the “fill line” if levels are looking a little low.
Keepin’ it Cool
Your air conditioning system is going to be working overtime as we head into some glorious days ahead. Your air conditioning filter prevents particles, debris, leaves and bugs from entering your vehicle. We recommend changing your air conditioning filters every 12,000 – 15,000 miles.
Burning the Midnight Oil
When you pop the hood to check your engine oil, it should always be amber in color. If the engine oil starts to turn black, change it immediately! Regular oil should last around 4,000 – 5,000 miles, and synthetics are good for 6,000 – 7,000 miles. If you haven’t changed your oil all winter long, let’s get you in before the summer begins.
Summer rain showers will probably spring up on your drive, so test out your windshield wipers to make sure they’re getting the job done. Windshield wipers are good for up to a year, but if you’re noticing a difference in your visibility get them changed sooner. Keeping your vision clear is essential for a safe road trip.
In Case of Emergency
Even though you’ll be loading up the trunk with gear and luggage for your fun summer activities, make sure you have a spot designated to store the must-haves for your vehicle emergency kit.
Make sure your emergency kit includes:
Jumper cables (Need a quick tutorial on how to use jumper cables? Check it out!)
- Car jack, lug wrench and a spare tire
- Tow strap or tow rope
- First aid kit
- Duct tape
