August is a great time for a road trip out of Denver. While there’s plenty of fabulous activities right here in town, it can be nice to hit the road and see what else this fabulous state has to offer. This can be a pretty hot time of the year, so make sure your air conditioner is working well and that you have all the accouterments you need to keep your cell phone and GPS going strong.
If you're looking to stay semi-close, consider heading down to Colorado Springs for a day or two. The Garden of the Gods is spectacular and wonderful for hiking or simply sitting in awe. Pikes Peak is waiting for your sturdy hiking boots, but make sure you hydrate like crazy and watch for signs of altitude sickness. Nothing spoils a road trip like a trip to the ER. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo might surprise you with all the animals it has to offer. There’s so much more to do and see in Colorado Springs, but this should get you started here.
Head on up to Fort Collins for a brewery tour. You might want to stay overnight and be prepared to Uber to and fro, because another thing that puts the kibosh on a fun-time road trip is getting a DUI. Have fun, stay safe! Fort Collins also boasts of wonderful restaurants and a fabulous old town downtown area with plenty of shopping opportunities.
Head west young man… or anyone else for that matter. Head on up into the mountains. Rocky Mountain National Park is fabulous for both driving through as well as getting out and exploring on foot. You can also book a campground for even more fun. If you stop in Estes Park along the way, the YMCA of the Rockies offers many different types of lodging as well as tons of family fun opportunities. If you’re really brave, book a night in room 217 at the Stanley Hotel. It’s reportedly one of the most haunted rooms in the world.
Other great mountain towns worthy of your visit include, but are not limited to, Breckenridge, Silverton, Ouray, Crested Butte, Glenwood Springs, and more! What would YOU add to the list of Colorado road-trip-worthy destinations?
