How Does Extreme Heat Affect Vehicles?

Yikes! If your dashboard gauge is showing you this, your car could be in serious trouble! Plus, there’s a good chance that you could be stranded on the side of the road. Who wants to spend a single summer day dealing with THIS kind of problem?! The summer heat can really take a toll on your vehicle’s engine, but there are plenty of things you can do to prevent ending up broken down.

During the summer months, we look forward to our road trips, whether it’s for a true vacation or just a simple opportunity to visit friends or family. While that’s great, the summer heat can push your car’s engine over the edge and cause it some serious damage. Not only will your trip be ruined, but your bank account could also take a big hit.

The heat can make your engine work harder to perform. And when it’s hot outside, we want to stay cool inside as we fly down the road. Running our A/C can add strain to our already overworked engine. One way to help keep it running cooler is to either turn off the A/C. Or, if things are really heating up, drive with your heater at full blast. It may sound counterintuitive, but it has the power to help cool down your engine.

Watch that gauge, but also make sure you are having your preventative maintenance done so that your fluid levels stay at optimal levels and a trained technician can have his or her eye out for wear and tear on belts and any other potential problem that could lead to leaving you stranded.

If you do have to pull over for an overheated engine, whatever you do, do NOT try to take the radiator cap off until the engine has completely cooled down and don’t fill it up with water. Always keep extra coolant in your car. When it is cool enough to check, one of the first things to look at is whether or not your radiator cap is still working right and is properly closed. This can be a simple fix. Or it can be something far more complex. Whatever you do, don’t wait for it to clear up on its own. Even if you can get your car running again, there’s no guarantee it’s truly fixed. As lovely as it would be if life really worked like that...
